“Fish has spent six years in jail. Six years alone. Six years keeping his mouth shut about the robbery, about the other men involved. The night he is released, the four men he protected with silence celebrate his freedom with a congratulatory dinner. The meal is a lavish array of sushi, served off the naked body of a beautiful young woman. The sushi girl seems catatonic, trained to ignore everything in the room, even if things become dangerous. Sure enough, the four unwieldy thieves can’t help but open old wounds in an attempt to find their missing loot.”
Ladies and gentlemen, meet Sushi Girl.
The film is filled with what I call an “OMG no ways” cast that includes Tony Todd (Candyman); Noah Hathaway (original Battlestar Galactica, The Neverending Story); James Duval (Donnie Darko); Andy Mackenzie (MacGruber); Cortney Palm (Superbad); Michael Biehn (The Terminator, Aliens), Sonny Chiba (Kill Bill Vol. 1), Jeff Fahey (Grindhouse); Ted Stryker (KROQ); Danny Trejo (Machete) and Mark Hamill (video game/animation voiceover GOD and duh, Star Wars).
Dude, think about it. Skywalker, Boxey/Atreyu, Frank The Bunny, Hattori Hanzo, John Connor, Candyman, Machete, Stryker AND The Lawnmower Man in ONE film?
Yeah…you’ve got drool on you.
While the film is filled with great moments, it’s Mark Hamill who steals it as Crow, a gay sadist with a penchant for torture and a twisted sense of humor. Also be on the lookout for Danny Trejo’s machete if you want a good laugh (as a matter of fact, it’s a perfect Easter Egg for the DVD release. Hint hint)!
Sushi Girl reminded me of Suicide Kings…if directed by Tarantino and set in a sushi house. If someone had said “This is a remake of a Japanese film from the 70′s,” I’d believe it…it’s got some great stuff that I can’t even tell you about because the film’s story is so intertwined, even talking about one particular scene spoils the whole thing.
