Warehouse 13: “A New Hope” Recap
It’s the end of the Warehouse and the end of the world.
After last season’s shocking finale, Myka, Pete, and Artie find themselves standing amidst the rubble of Warehouse 13 and a planet in chaos. Their only hope is an artifact that will rewind the day.
“A New Hope” pulls at the heartstrings of its viewers as the Warehouse agents grieve the loss of Mrs. Fredrick, H.G. Wells, and Agent Jinks, reminding us of the fragility of life.
“We’ve all lost someone we care about,” says Pete, to which Artie replies, “And if you live long enough, it happens over and over again.”
It is an oddly poignant and timely episode, in light of the Aurora shooting. So many of us grapple with issues of death, tragedy, and loss, and our favorite Secret Service agents become an unexpected funnel for those of us currently coping with senseless destruction. If only we had an artifact to rewind time.
And yet it cannot save everyone. Already, it is too late to save Steve Jinks, though Claudia remains determined to find a way to do so. Her anger bubbles into rage, and the Star Wars-based episode title becomes doubly powerful. With the destruction of Pandora’s Box in the Warehouse, hope itself is gone. More than that, however, it appears that, over the coming season, Claudia’s rage will lead her to the Dark Side.
Pete’s death, though reversed by the temporal rewind, is heart-wrenching, and Artie’s sorrow echoes in the hearts of the viewers. It is never easy to watch a favorite character die, even knowing that his resurrection is imminent.
Pete is not the only character back from the dead. Mrs. Frederick returns, though the sudden greying of her hair suggests that not all is right with their new reality. The seemingly permanent death of H.G. Wells is also reversed, and, if Artie’s warm words to the Regents on her behalf are any indication, this will not be the last we see of her.
What did you think of last night’s episode? Were you pleased with the plot to bring back the Warehouse, or should it have remained destroyed?
